I created this website to share experiences both good and bad, provide resources, ask and answer questions, invite conversation and most importantly encourage you to do the same.
Being a caregiver can be incredibly rewarding, a learning and growing experience, it requires empathy, compassion, great communication skills, resilience and patience. At times it’s incredibly frustrating, stressful, exhausting and leave you at a loss. New behaviours that weren’t there yesterday can make you doubt your abilities.
Caring for a family member is very different than caring for a client. I greatly admire family caregivers, they are truly inspiring. They often don’t get the support they need, leading to isolation, enormous amounts of stress, fatigue and burnout.
In 2018 I started volunteering in a long term care facility attached to a local hospital in the recreation department. On my first day, I was sent to visit a resident in his room. I came up behind him, he didn’t hear me and was startled. He took a huge swing at me and missed by a mile. He became one of my favourite residents, I would hold his hand and dance with him at events, he had a great laugh.
